Christmas at Wick Radio / GKR
Christmas at GKR was always a very busy time. The UK deepsea trawler fleet remained at sea over Christmas and thousands of Christmas greetings telegrams were passed from ship to shore and shore to ship. Wick's evening HF WT broadcast of uncleared telegrams could go on for two hours - all hand keyed. Christmas Morning would see the station fully staffed, with all attempts being made to clear any left over radio telegram traffic and all RT channels fully occupied all morning as shops, oil rigs, lay barges and craft of all types phoned their Christmas greeting to loved ones at home. Come lunch time and all would calm down. On board ships, attention moved to enjoying traditional Christmas fayre. While on shore the radio station staff organised themslves to ensure that everyone one duty had a long lunch of tea-time break during which they could enjoy time at home with their families.
